Doctor Who, A Town Called Mercy Trailers: BBC1 and BBC America

Doctor Who, “A Town Called Mercy” Trailers: BBC1 and BBC America.

This third episode of Doctor Who Series/Season 7 promises to be a-may-zing.

Shot on location in Almeria, Spain it used the same sets as Sergio Leone’s classic spaghetti westerns, and the promotional images pay clear homage to grumpy old man iconic poncho-wearer Clint Eastwood.

Snippets of the episode were featured in a trailer reel that showrunners Steven Moffat and Caro Skinner debuted at WhoCon back in March 2012, and there was more than a frisson of excitement when the crowd recognised guest star — and all-around sci fi god — Ben Browder (Farscape, Stargate SG-1).

The episode also features Adrian Scarborough, who was most recently seen playing Pritchard the butler in the rebooted Upstairs Downstairs.

The two trailers below are very similar, but there is a noticeable difference in tone. The one from BBC America is darker, and has more of an emphasis on action and heavy weaponry, whereas  the BBC1 trailer feels lighter and more comedic.

In a recent interview with SFX, Browder revealed that he’s long had a soft spot for Doctor Who: “Look, in my house, I have a TARDIS. It’s a small one, but I have a TARDIS. There’s a sonic screwdriver, too.”

Check out what writer Toby Whithouse told SFX about the inspiration behind “A Town Called Mercy”.

Doctor Who Series 7 airs in the UK on Saturdays, 7:35pm on BBC1.

Battlestar Galactica Meets Abed: Tricia Helfer, Matt Lucas To Guest Star On Community

Extraordinarily perfect casting news to blow Abed’s mind: Battlestar Galactica siren Tricia Helfer and Little Britain creator Matt Lucas are to guest star in the upcoming Community Season 4.

TVLine exclusively reports that Helfer and Lucas will cross Abed’s path in Episode 4.

In a plot inspired, perhaps, by this year’s WhoCon in Cardiff, the pair will play Inspector Spacetime superfans attending a convention for Abed’s beloved Doctor Who parody.

At a WhoCon panel session Steven Moffat was asked about the possibility of doing a Doctor Who — Inspector Spacetime crossover.

The Doctor Who showrunner joked, “I’m not going to have those Americans taking the rip out of our show!”

But what a fantastic idea for Comic-Con or Community, perhaps? Come on, Matt Smith! Save Greendale!

Doctor Who Season 7 premieres in the UK on Saturday 1 September, 7:20pm on BBC1.

Doctor Who Season 7 premieres in the US on Saturday 1 September, 9pm ET on BBC America.

Community Season 4 premieres in the US on Friday 19 October at 8:30pm ET on NBC.

Doctor Who: Steven Moffat Talks Season 7

At the first official Doctor Who Convention of the new era in late March 2012 in Wales, stars and creators, including showrunner Steven Moffat and executive producer Caroline Skinner, gathered to give Whovians updates on all things TARDIS.

Teasing the upcoming Season 7 Moffat told reporters: “There’ll be utter heartbreaking tragedy to knock about, silly fun … But if you’re laughing one minute, expect to be crying in five minutes.”

But Moffat generally adhered to his spoiler-averse reputation and stuck to his maxim of, “If you want to know what happens in Doctor Who, watch it!” However, both he and Skinner were more forthcoming in panel sessions where they and more members of the “Doctor Who” cast and crew took questions from attendees.

And, in a masterstroke that underlined the value they place on the knowledgeable and engaging Whovians, the pair even presented the world premiere of the Season 7 teaser trailer during a panel session when many reporters were sequestered away in another room.

What did Moffat have to say about new spin-off shows? Is there any chance of a Sherlock and Doctor Who crossover? What big-name U.S. star would the casting director really like to head to Who? And just what does Moffat make of Community’s Doctor Who spoof, Inspector Spacetime? Find out below!

Here’s what I was able to get straight from The Moff’s mouth for HuffPostTV:

Doctor Who: Season 7 Scoop

This is my report for The Huffington Post from the Doctor Who Convention held in Cardiff, Wales in March 2012.

Caro Skinner and Steven Moffat were holding their cards pretty close to their chest and dodging reporters as much as they could, but they did unveil the first Season 7 trailer to the packed crowd of enthusiastic and knowledgeable Whovians.

Doctor Who: Matt Smith Not Leaving!

With Doctor Who 7 looming (huzzah) it seems like a good time to revisit the past ahead of what promises to be a tumultuous season.

Back in March 2012 I had the pleasure of interviewing Doctor Who stars Matt Smith and Karen Gillan for The Huffington Post.

I sat down with them at the frankly awesome Doctor Who Convention in Cardiff, Wales on March 24 and 25 to talk about all things Whovian.

Smith chatted about his future as the Eleventh Doctor, the timing and manner of Amy and Rory’s departure in Season 7, and what he would like to do next. Plus, he revealed the cast’s nickname for Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat.

The stars weighed in on the Doctor’s new companion, Jenna-Louise Coleman, and Smith threw down the gauntlet to Who wannabe, Helen Mirren. Click over to HuffPostTV for all of the scoop.
